Magnificent autumn colors in mirror image over the reservoir at the South Mountain Reservation showcases breathtaking beauty. The foreground is framed by dry branches with a few remaining yellow leaves.

Hi, This is Adriana, the beekeeper from South Mountain Bees.

The weather is changing quickly and the fall colors are at peak. Yesterday was so balmy, that my son and I decided to go for a walk in the reservation. The mirror image of the autumn foliage on the reservoir was breathtaking. We didn't see any terrapins this time. Maybe it's already too cold for them, or maybe it was too busy for their sense of safety. I have to say I was impressed by the compliance of the mask requirement. We were ready to go back if we didn't feel safe, but most people wore masks properly (a.k.a. covering both mouth and nose)

Here's a picture of a terrapin on a log on October 27, last year.

The bees were also excited with the weather.  After an overcast morning, they were happy to take advantage of the sunny afternoon to gather as much pollen as possible to pack up their stores for the winter.

Here you can see them flying in and out of the hive. It is hard to tell by just looking at them if they are bringing in any nectar (the sweet flower water that bees turn into honey) without opening the hive, but from the front entrance we can see when they are able to gather pollen.

They mix the pollen they find in flowers with a little bit of nectar to make it sticky to be able to pack them in their hind legs. See if you can spot the yellow/orange pom-poms that they are carrying into the hive.

Judging by the color it might be either golden rod or fall flowering crocuses. Have a look.

But the reason I'm here is because four women owned businesses got together to offer a Fall Giveaway, and I am one of them. As I promise that you'd be hearing about anything fun we are doing at South Mountain Bees, here I am sharing the news with you.
